Work From Home Guidance In The UK Extended
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the government is taking steps to move towards the final stages of reopening the country after the coronavirus pandemic. The work from home guidance for people in England has been extended to 19 July 2021, having been pushed back from the initial date of 21 June. There was a rise in the purchase of office furniture like electric height adjustable desks and the like during the lockdown period, primarily because of the work from home provision. Height adjustable standing desks are great pieces of furniture because of their utility and ergonomic benefits.
The move towards returning to normal working conditions will still depend on keeping the virus down, said the Prime Minister. Everyone will have to wait until the government can clarify what the final decision will be. Johnston recently said that it was a “difficult choice” to extend the lockdown restrictions further but added that he was concerned about the delta variant of the virus.
The government’s guidance encouraging people to work from home has reduced the risk of coronavirus transmission. Government scientists have privately suggested that people continue working from home to minimise contact with others. They also mentioned that measures such as working from home, having good ventilation in buildings, and keeping desks apart could help keep infection rates in check.
According to a government scientist source, there’s no reason to return to work full-time if work can be done from home. Moreover, even in August of last year, people were only at about half of their pre-pandemic contact levels with others.
Worries
In February, according to unions, employers were putting workers at risk and increasing Covid infection rates in communities, as research showed that up to one in five people go to work unnecessarily.
The alarming findings come as Matthew Taylor, the government’s outgoing employment adviser, said employers who break Covid rules should be named, shamed, and fined.
Frances O’Grady, Trades Union Congress general secretary, said that nobody should be forced to work in an office if they could do their job from home. She added that employers should be reprimanded for needlessly putting their employees at risk and increasing the likelihood of transmission in local communities.
The Home Office
Working from home has become a part of many people’s daily lives in the United Kingdom over the past year. When it comes to creating a suitable working area in the home, one of the biggest issues is space, or rather a lack of it. However, it is critical to carve out a space that helps people become productive and ensure they have the right furniture and equipment to work comfortably and efficiently.
One of the most essential pieces of furniture an employee working from home can invest in is an electric height adjustable desk. This enables different positions when working and will allow for better ergonomic position changes throughout the day. They can also position shelves and desks in easy-to-reach areas, especially if the employee has items they need to use all the time.
It’s a good idea to position your desk with a view, as studies have shown that views of greenery, even in your peripheral vision, can help you feel rested and rejuvenated, allowing you to focus for longer. Bringing in more natural light by keeping windows clear of obstructions will also improve mental energy, which, in turn, will enhance an employee’s productivity. Natural light in office spaces has been shown in numerous studies to improve worker satisfaction and productivity.
Experts agree that using an ergonomic workstation, which supports your body in a neutral position, can help reduce the risk of discomfort or pain caused by these stressors.
Finding a suitable chair is one of the most challenging aspects of organising an ergonomic workspace. First, consider your height, which means your thighs should be parallel to the ground, and your feet should be flat. Under the desk, there should be enough room for your thighs, feet, and knees to move around comfortably. If there isn’t enough room to adjust, you could also use a footrest for support. Nothing else should be placed under the desk.
If finding the perfect office chair proves too tricky, another viable option would be to forego it entirely and work while standing up simply. More and more people are opting to adopt this setup using special height-adjustable standing desks.
Working while standing up comes with many health benefits, such as strengthening one’s leg muscles, spine, and joints. It could also prove to be a great way to keep physically fit while lockdown restrictions are still in place, especially since people have fewer opportunities to exercise nowadays.
The position of the screen from one’s head also matters. You may end up craning your neck if the screen or monitor is too far away. To find the right spot, sit down and extend your arm until your middle finger touches the screen. The angle should be between 10 and 20 degrees.
If you’re using two monitors, make sure they’re next to each other. To avoid tilting your head back and getting neck pain and headaches, the top of the screen should be below or at eye level.
Experts have discovered that electronic devices with screens emit blue light, which can cause macular degeneration, eye fatigue, and, in the worst-case scenario, blindness. Consider purchasing computer glasses if you spend a lot of time on your smartphone or in front of a computer monitor.
Adding natural elements, such as an indoor aquarium for instance, will also provide plenty of benefits. Not only will these provide calm and tranquillity, but they can also improve the overall aesthetic of a room as well.
Putting desk plants and flowers can liven things up and improve the overall air quality in the office space. However, choosing the right plant is also crucial. Experts advise using aloe vera for its air-purifying qualities, as well as fragrant herbs like basil, mint, and rosemary for their natural scents. Also, these plants are relatively easy to grow and useful for other purposes as well, such as cooking.
